Using the Mouse
 Hold with thumb and rightmost fingers.  Use two remaining fingers to press mouse buttons.

Mouse Terms
 Click Press and release the left mouse button.
 Click and Drag  Press the left mouse button and hold it down while you drag it over text or object.
 Double Click Quickly press the left mouse button twice
 Right Click Press and release the right mouse button.

Displaying the Date
 To display the date move the mouse over the area in the left bottom corner where you see the time and hold it still for a few seconds.

Using the Start Button
 The Start button lets you display a list of items which perform tasks.
 Click the Start button and a menu appears.
 To select an item from the menu, move the mouse over the item.  If the item has an arrow another menu will appear.
 Select your desired item and click to open it.

Opening WordPad
 Click the Start button
 Move the mouse to Programs and hold it there until another menu appears.
 Move the mouse to the side to Accessories until another menu appears.
 Move the mouse to the third menu and click WordPad.

Minimizing, Maximizing, and Closing a Window
 In the upper left corner of the screen are 3 buttons, one with a dash, one with a box and one with an X.
 The first (dash) minimizes the window and the program or file title appears on the taskbar.
 The second button (box) maximizes the window and enlarges it onscreen.
 The third button (X) closes the window completely.

Moving a Window
 If a window covers an item onscreen you can move it.
 1.  Move the mouse over the title bar of the window you wish to move.
 2.  Press and hold the left mouse button as you move the window.
 3.  Release the button.

Changing a Window Size
 1.  Move the mouse to the edge of the window you wish to resize until the mouse arrow becomes a double arrow.
 2.  Press and hold the left mouse button and move the window to the desired size.

Switching Between Windows
 1.  Open WordPad and minimize the screen.
 2.  Open Paint
  Click Start, move up the menu to Programs, across to Accessories, and across to Paint. Click the left mouse button on Paint.
 3.  Maximize WordPad.
 You can only work in one program at a time.  To move between these two programs:
 Click the mouse on the program screen you wish to work with. (This is called Cascade Windows.)  Notice the button with the program's title in the taskbar becomes activated.  The taskbar will display a button for each open window on your screen.

 -or-
 Click the mouse on the program's button in the taskbar to activate it.

Tile Windows
 To view the contents of all your open windows:
 1.  Click the right mouse button over an empty area of the taskbar.  A menu will appear.
 2.  Move the mouse over the Tile option and click.

Getting Help
 1.  Move the mouse over Start and press the left button.
 2.  Move up the menu bar to Help and click the left mouse button.
 3.  The Help Topics window will appear.
 4.  To display the index move the mouse over the Index tab and press the left button.
 5.  Move the mouse over the area in #1 and type the first few letters of the topic of interest (for example:  ti for time).
 6.  An area displaying topics beginning with those letters will appear.  Move the mouse over the desired topic and double click.

Scrolling Through A Window
 When a program is opened a scroll bar will appear at the left side and at the bottom of the screen.
 1.  To move down the window click the down arrow on the left scroll bar or click and drag the button inside the left scroll bar.
 2.  To move side to side within a window use the arrows or button on the bottom scroll bar.

Using WordPad
 WordPad is a program which allows you to create documents.
 1.  Move the mouse over Start and click the left button.
 2.  Move the mouse to Programs.
 3.  Move the mouse over to Accessories.
 4.  Move the mouse over to WordPad and left click.
 5.  Maximize the WordPad screen.
 Enter text by typing.  The flashing line is called the insertion point or cursor.  To start a new paragraph press Enter.  To indent press Tab.
 To save a document for future use move the mouse over the diskette on the tool bar and press the left button.  A Save As dialog box appears.  Type a name for the document and left click the Save button.
 To exit WordPad move the mouse over the X (close) button and left click.
 To reopen the saved document open WordPad, move the mouse over the open folder button on the tool bar and left click.  An Open dialog box appears.  Left click the name of the document you wish to open and double click or click once and click Open.
 To print a document move the mouse over File and left click.  Move the mouse to Print and left click.  The Print dialog box appears.  Select the Print Range and Number of Copies you desire and left click OK.

Editing text can only be accomplished by highlighting it first.  To highlight text click the left mouse behind the text you wish to edit.  Do not release the left button but drag the mouse over the text and then release the left button.
Once highlighted, you can now make the following changes:
 Change Font Style by moving the mouse over the arrow in the Times New Roman box and clicking the left mouse button.  Select the text font style you desire and left click the mouse.
 Change Font Size by moving the mouse over the arrow in the Font Size box and clicking the left mouse button.  Select the size font you desire and left click the mouse.
 Make font Bold by clicking the B button on the toolbar.
 Make font Italicized by clicking the I button on the toolbar.
 Underline font by clicking the u button on the toolbar.
 Align font by clicking the Left Align, Center Align, or Right Align button on the toolbar.
Create bullets beside font by clicking the Bullets button on the toolbar.
Note:  All these buttons must be deactivated by clicking the button a second time.

To insert text move the mouse to the point you desire to place the text and left click the mouse.  You can insert a blank space by pressing the space bar.  To insert a blank line press the Enter key.
 To delete text, highlight it and press the Delete key.
 To erase an error:

  Click the mouse behind it and press Backspace.
            -or-
  Click the mouse in front of it and press Delete.

Using Paint
 Paint is a program which allows you to create drawings.
 1.  Move the mouse over Start and click the left button.
 2.  Move the mouse to Programs.
 3.  Move the mouse over to Accessories.
 4.  Move the mouse over to Paint and left click.
 5.  Maximize the Paint screen.
 To draw lines move the mouse over the line tool you want to use and press the left button.  The pencil button draws thin lines, the stamp button draws lines of different thickness, the diagonal line button draws straight lines.
 Select a color by clicking inside the color box at the bottom of the screen.
 Select a line thickness by clicking the mouse over one the thickness options at the left of the screen.
 Press and hold the mouse on the screen until the line you desire appears and then release the mouse button.  When using the pencil and stamp buttons you can make the line you draw perfectly straight by pressing the Shift key as you draw.
To draw shapes move the mouse over the shape on the side toolbar you desire and left click.  Click and drag the mouse onscreen as you create the desired size of the shape. To make a perfect circle or square press the Shift key as you draw.
 To erase an area move the mouse over the eraser button you desire to use on the side tool bar and click.  You can select a color for the eraser by right clicking a color with the mouse.  Move the mouse onscreen to the desired area and click and drag the mouse over it.
 To Undo the last change move the mouse to Edit in the taskbar.  Click the left button and move the mouse to Undo and click.  The last change you made will be be cancelled.
 To save a drawing click File in the taskbar.  Move the mouse to Save As... and click.  The Save As dialog box will appear.  Type the name of your drawing and click the down arrow beside the Save As space to determine where you will save your drawing on your computer.
 To Print your drawing click File and Print.
 To exit click the X button in the top left corner of the screen.
 To open a drawing, Open Paint, move the mouse to File and click.  Click Open and when the Open dialog box appears click the mouse over the name of your drawing. (If you saved your drawing in another location you must click the down arrow beside the Save As space to determine where saved your drawing on your computer.)  After opening a drawing it can be changed in any way you desire.

Viewing the Contents of the Computer

Storage Devices
Hard Drive Primary storage space inside the computer usually called drive C:  To find the size of the hard drive open My Computer.  Maximize the screen and click on the C: drive one time.  The Free Space and Capacity figures will show at the bottom of the screen.
Floppy Drive stores information on a diskette usually called drive A:
CD-ROM Drive reads information from a CD (Compact Disk) usually called drive D:

My Computer allows you to view all folders and files stored on any drive. A folder stores related information and can contain files and other folders.  A file is a named collection of information.  It has a picture icon which helps identify the file type.
 1.  Move the mouse over My Computer icon and double click the left button.
 2.  The objects in the dialog box show the storage drives of your computer.
 3.  To view the contents of a drive double click it. (To view the contents of a CD-ROM or a diskette make sure it is inserted.)

A window will appear with all the folders stored that drive.  To view the contents of a folder double click it.  You can change the view of these folders by clicking View in the taskbar. You can choose to view the items as Large Icons or Small Icons.  To have the items arranged to fit the window click Arrange Icons and to the side click Auto Arrange.  To view information about each file click View, Details.  You will see the name of each file, its size, its type, and the date and time it was last changed.  To see only the names of files click View, List.  To sort these names from A to Z move the mouse
over Name and click.  You can also sort from smallest to largest by clicking Size.  To sort by type from A to Z click Type.  To sort from newest to oldest click Modified.

To work with a particular file move the mouse over the file name and click the left mouse button.  At the bottom of the dialog box you will see the number of files selected and the size of the file.  To work with a group of files move the mouse over the first file you want to select and left click.  Press and hold down the Shift key as you move the mouse to the last file you want to select and the click the left mouse button.  To select several scattered files move the mouse over the file you want to select and left click. Press and hold the Ctrl key.  Still holding Ctrl click all other files you wish to select.

To create a new folder choose the drive in which your folder will be placed.  Move the mouse over File and click.  Then click New and move the mouse to the side and click Folder.  A new folder will appear with the temporary name, New Folder.  Type the name for your folder and press Enter.  To see the contents of the new folder move the mouse over the folder and double click. Close the folder by clicking the upper X left button.

Shut Down Windows
Make sure all disk or CD-ROMs are removed before continuing.
1.  Move the mouse over the Start button and click.
2.  Move the mouse over Shut Down and click the left button.
3.  The Shut Down dialog box will appear.  To shut down windows click inside the first circle (Shut down the computer) and click the Yes button.
4.  You will see a screen stating you can now safely turn off your computer.
5.  Press the power button to shut the computer down.  If your computer has a separate button to control the monitor be sure to turn it off also.
