Getting Started
1.  Open Netscape Communicator
2.  At the top line click Communicator, Show Component Bar
3.  Click Composer
4.  Click File, Save As...
5.  Type the name of your web page file and the location you wish to save it to (a:) and
click save.  Do not use capital letters or spaces in this file name.
8.  In the next dialog box type the title of the page using capital letters and spaces as
  needed. This title will be the text which appears as a bookmark.
Anytime you wish to preview your page on a web browser click the Preview icon on the
tool bar.

Backgrounds
Before creating your background you must decide whether you plan to use a solid color background or a background image.  Background images are located on the Internet.  It is best to locate the image first and download it before going to the next step.
1.  Place the mouse anywhere on the white screen and press the right mouse button. In the dialog box click Page Properties.
2.  Click the tab Colors and Backgrounds.  You will decide here to use a solid colorbackground (click Color Scheme) or use a background image.
To use a background image:
   Check inside Use Image and click Choose File...
   Click location of background you downloaded from the Internet.
3.  You will also need to decide the color of your links (active and visited).  Consider the color of your
 background when you do so.
4.  Click OK.

Text
1.  Type the text as you would in any word processing program. Text changes are made by highlighting the passage you desire to change.
2.  You can change font style by clicking the arrow beside the text Variable Width.
3.  To change the size click the next arrow.
4.  Font color can be changed by clicking the arrow beside the black box .
5.  Font can be made bold, italicized, and underlined by first highlighting it and then clicking the appropriate buttons on the tool bar.
6.  There are also three buttons on the tool bar to control text alignment once the text hasbeen highlighted.

Graphics

Before you insert images (pictures, icons or bars) you should first download and save them on diskette from the Internet.  Some images on the Internet are very large and can be resized using an image editing program to change the pixel size.
To save an image from the Internet:
1.  Place the mouse over the image and press the right mouse button.
2.  Click save image as...
To insert a graphic on your page:
1.  To insert a graphic click Insert, Image. Choose File...
2.  To insert a graphic from another file on your computer's hard drive click Browse andlocate the file and image.
5.  If you click on the image you can also edit it on screen.  Once an image is highlightedit can be aligned on the page by using the alignment buttons. The image can be resized or moved on screen using the mouse.
6.  You can also insert a bar by clicking the H.Line button on the tool bar.  There are avariety of lines that can be downloaded from the Internet.

Hyper links

 New Page
 1.  First create and name the new page.  Click new and go through the previousGetting Started steps.
 2.  To hyper link to this new page highlight the text you wish to link and click thelink button on the top tool bar.
 2.  Click Choose File and find the name of your new page and click OK.

URL Site Hyper links
 1.  To hyper link to a URL site, highlight the text you wish to link, and click thelink button.
 2.  Beside link source type http: and the entire address (for example: type http://www.cnn.com to hyper link to CNN Online).
 3.  Click OK.

Email Hyper links
 1.  To hyper link to an email address, highlight the text you wish to link, and clickthe link button.
 2.  Under hyper link type type mailto:  and the entire email address (for example:  type
  mailto:campbelc@ten-nash.ten.k12.tn.us) and click OK.

Table
1.  To insert a table click Table on the tool bar.
2.  Choose the number of rows and columns you want in your table.
3.  You can also add color to your table by clicking Use Color and clicking the large button beside those words.  Then click the desired color.
4.  Type information in the table by clicking inside the cell.  Information in tables can be hyper linked.  Text style and size can also be changed or realigned.
5.  To change the table size you created click inside the table.
6.  At the top of the screen click Insert, Table and decide whether you wish to change the number of rows or columns.

Bordered Backgrounds
To create a table to use with a bordered background:
1.  Click Table on the toolbar.
2.  Choose 1 row and 1 column.
3.  In the Table Alignment section select Right.
4.  In the Border Line Width, Cell Spacing, and Cell Padding, select 0.
5.  The width of the table will depend on the width of the border. In the Table Width section try 80 percent.  Click OK.  If the table is still covering your border or isn't large enough, right click the mouse inside the table, and left click Table Properties.  Then change the Table Width percentage.

Target
Target words can be created on a page.
1.  Highlight the word you wish to target and click target button on the tool bar.  Aname will be assigned to your target word.  You can change the name if you wish.
2.  Highlight the word you want to link to the target word and click the link button on the tool bar.
3.  In the dialog box click the target name.
4.  Click OK.

Sound
To insert sound file
1.  Locate sound file.  If on the Internet, right click sound file, select Save image as...
Be sure the sound file ends with the three letter extensions .wav or .mid before saving.
Save file to the folder that contains your web site.
2.  In Composer, click Insert...HTML tag...
3.  A dialog box will appear.  In the box type the following text.  Replace the ---with the
name of your sound file.  Change the .wav extension to .mid if your sound file is a midi
file.

Saving Your Work

1.  Click Tools, Check Spelling... to check your page for errors. After errors are corrected continue to the next step.
2.  Click File, Save as...
3.  When the name and location of your file appears click OK.

Chat Rooms
Chat rooms are java programs.  There are many ways to create chat rooms for your site.  The simplest is to cut and paste text from a site that offers a chat room free such as, Chat Planet.

JAVA
To add more features to your site, such as a guest book or counter, visit Cut-N-Paste Javascript.  This site has a search feature which allows you to look for the feature you want and copy and paste the script. Java Script Source contains several types of Java scripts with directions for copying and pasting to your web page.

FTP
FTP or file transfer protocol is the method of uploading your files to your web site.  Many servers, such as GeoCities offer ftp through their web site. Often you must obtain ftp software to upload your files.  Explorer FTP is simple to use.  Other ftp software can be found and downloaded at Softseek.

  To upload to Geocities:
  1.  Go to File Manager
 http://www.geocities.com/homestead/file_manager.html
  2.  Scroll down to supply your member name and password, click
   submit
  3.  Scroll down to EZ File Upload.  If you have several files to upload you may wish to change the number of files to upload.  The site defaults to 5 files, but can go as high as 20.  After you change this number, click View.
  4.  Automatically convert filenames to lowercase if your html and graphics are saved in lowercase.
  5.  Click on Browse...locate you file, then press Upload File.   You can only upload one file at a time.  It is easiest to begin with the htm or html files.
  6.  To upload graphics click on Browse...and select all files.  Locate your files again, but this time you will be viewing you gif and jpg files also.  Again you can only upload one at a time.  Click the graphic file and press Upload File.
Note:  Be sure to click Browse...all files each time you upload a graphic.
After your files are uploaded you may preview them by locating the htm or html file in your list and clicking view.  This method will also give you the exact URL for your file.
