Definitions:  Directions below that refer “your webpage folder,” mean the folder that you created with your school initials, for example RSS.  Directions that refer to the image folder, mean the folder that you created called “images.”)

 

  1. Create at least 2 folders: 

1)     Create a folder (images) for all pictures, clipart, and background files.Copy and paste or save all pictures, clipart, or background files in the images folder before inserting them in a webpage.

2)     Create a folder to store all web pages.

  1. Keep folders at a minimum.  You really only need one for .html files and one for images.  Remember:  the more folders you create, the more folders you must make on your webserver and upload files to so KISS (Keep it Simple, Sweetie!).
  2. Remember all files and folders must be one word.
  3. Never use punctuation marks in file names of folder names.
  4. Every folder created on your computer must also be created on your web server.  To do so, use FTP Explorer to log in to your account.  Once connected, click File…New…Folder.  Rename the folder the exact same name you used on your computer.  Capitals must be used the same way and no spaces can be used.
  5. If you are planning to use images you have saved on a disk, copy and paste all images into the “image” folder you created in your webpage folder.  Before doing so, open the image in Photoshop and resize or edit the image.  Then click File…Save for Web…and use the dropdown triangle to locate C:…your web folder…image folder.  The file name must be one word only.
  6. Only store images you are planning to use in your webpage in the image folder.  Delete images you do not plan to use.  This will prevent confusion when uploading and enable you to only upload the necessary images.
  7. If you forget when files you have changed, right-click anywhere in the folder and select View…By Modified.  This will list the files in order they have been modified by you showing you the latest files that have been changed.
  8. NEVER save a file created in FrontPage in Netscape Composer.  Composer will change all folder/file locations causing the page to be completely reconstructed again in FrontPage.
  9. Installing FrontPage:

1)     Make sure the computer has at least 64 mg of RAM.

2)     Keep track of the registration number.

3)     Install the software on only one computer.

Important:  CHECK YOUR SPELLING BEFORE UPLOADING!

Do not upload files directly from a diskette, zip disk, or CD.  All files must be copied and pasted in either the web page folder or your image folder.  Then installed in the webpage and saved before uploading.  Uploading files directly will cause hyperlink problems.

 

I want to work on a webpage file that I created on another computer, but do not have the file with me at this time.  How can I work on that file?

 

Downloading Files:  If you plan to download a webpage file already online, follow these steps:

1)     Open FTP Explorer. 

2)     Locate the desired webpage

3)     Click File…Download to…Choose the location on the hard drive in which the .htm and .html files are stored.   This will only save the .html (text) information.  To save an image or a background image create an image folder on your harddrive.  Open the image folder on the server through the FTP Explorer software.  Select the desired images and click File…Download to…

4)     Now the .html files can be opened in FrontPage. 

5)     Save the page and follow the steps for uploading.

 

Uploading Files:  Before uploading files, view the webpages in Netscape.  To do so, open Netscape…Click File…Open Page…Choose File…locate the desired webpage to view.  You must go back to FrontPage to do editing.

Open FTP Explorer logging into your account by clicking Connect then follow these steps:

1)     Click File…Upload.

2)     Locate and open your webpage folder on your computer’s C: drive.

3)     Click the first .html or .htm file.

4)     Hold the Shift key.

5)     Click the last .html or .htm file.

6)     Click Open.

 

Creating New Folders on the Web Server:

1)     Open FTP Explorer and log into your account by clicking Connect.

2)     Click File…New Folder

3)     A new folder will be created at the bottom of the  screen.  The folder must now be renamed.

4)     Click the New Folder (the folder will turn blue).

5)     Click File…Rename and type the exact name for the folder that you used on your computer.  Remember:  No spaces or punctuation marks.

 

Uploading Files to Folders:  Open FTP Explorer logging into your account by clicking Connect then follow these steps:

1)     Locate and open your webpage folder on the server by double-clicking it.

2)     Click File…Upload

3)     Locate and open the same folder on your computer.

4)     Click the first file.

5)      Hold the Shift key.

6)      Click the last file.

7)      Click Open.

8)      The files will be uploaded to the folder on the web server.
