The New Market Elementary School library program is an integral part of the
school curriculum. Kindergarten students attend
two thirty-minute library classes each week, while students in grades 1-5 attend
library class for forty minutes once per week. During class, students
participate in story time, literature response activities, lessons geared toward
library skills and research, and self-selected reading. They also learn to
select, locate, and care for the books they are checking out. Students in
grades 2-5 learn to use the
library's computerized search
program to locate books that will support classroom lessons or simply provide for their
own reading enjoyment. Kindergarten and first grade students become
accustomed to the library's layout and procedures as they experience both the
excitement and responsibility associated with choosing, borrowing, and returning
their own library books.
