First and Second Grade
First and second
grade students are also participating in the Volunteer State Book Award
Voting. We are reading the 20 picture book nominees during class and
then we will vote on our favorite. These votes will be sent to the
state and the winner will be announced in April. We are using these books to
discuss characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of a story.
Third Grade
These students have
become more experienced in using the library's search computer to locate
materials. They are learning to locate the call number in the program
and then locate the book on the shelf. Students have learned to use the
basic, power and visual searches for the catalog. Third grade students
are also participating in the Volunteer State Book Award Voting. We are
using these books to discuss how the events of the story effect the
characters, different types of setting, first and third person point of view.
Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade
These students have
also become more experienced in using the library's search computer to locate
materials. They are learning about the different sections of the library
and the types of books in each section. They have been exploring the
catalog in depth and learned many new things about searching for a book.
Fourth and Fifth grade students are also exploring the research process.
They are learning to evaluate and determine the reliability and
appropriateness of sources. Students will write a research paper
on a given topic using at least three sources, two of which must be print
sources.
