Weather In A Box
Grade Level:  3rd-5th 
Overview:  Students will use problem-solving skills to learn about the weather. 

Objectives 
In this lesson, students will: 
· Participate in the reading of local weather conditions (Weather Channel Online http://www.weather.com)
· Participate in the documentation of local weather conditions 

Time Frame
5-10 minutes daily for a one-two week period of time 

Materials
1. Cardboard box that can hold paper, pencil, gauges, books, pictures, etc. 
2. 8 ½” X 11” white art paper 
3. Pencils and crayons 
4. Timer with bell 
5. Thermometers 
6. Barometers 
7. Rain gauges 
8. Handouts on types of clouds using rain gauges, storm fronts, pressure, etc. 

Procedure
1. Begin talking about weather and visit online sites that provide more sources of information 
2. Record the weather using each of the devices stored in the box. 
3. Cooperative groups document, chart, and graph the weather conditions through the day or week as appropriate.  One group will focus on temperature, one on barometric pressure, cloud type and formation, and one on the level and amount of rainfall. 
4. Set the timer for one-hour intervals.  As it goes off the groups proceed outside for 5 minutes to check on and record the temperature, barometric pressure, cloud type and formation, and the level and amount of rainfall. 
5. At the end of each day the class will be able to compile and display by means of the mural paper the hourly changes in conditions for that day.
