Time Frame
Three 1-hour sessions plus additional time for research

Materials

3.  Paper & pencil

Procedure
1. Divide the class into cooperative groups of 3-4 members each.
Begin a discussion based on the following questions:
· Who is a hero?
· What makes a person a hero?
· Are all great athletes heroes?  Why or Why not?
· What real sports hero would you want to be like?
· Why are some famous sport celebrities considered heroes and some not?
List on the board ideas students have based on these questions.

2.  Provide computer time for each group to research their chosen sports hero on the Internet.  Ask each group to find the following information:
· Full name
· Birthdate/place
· Childhood background (if available)
· Family background
· Sports background

3.  Students then compose a rough draft and then a final report based on the information learned through this research.  If time permits the reports could by typed on a computer word processor and printed.  The report can also include illustrations or downloaded images from the Internet.

4.  Students present their report to the class and the final copies of the reports can be posted on the bulletin board, Sports Hall of Fame!
