My Game’s the Best in Town
Grade Level: 3rd-8th

Overview:  Students create their own original game to be played by others.

Objectives 
In this lesson, students will: 

  • Organize a game 
  • Create rules
  • Sequence events
  • Write directions
  • Instruct others
Time Frame:
45 minutes to plan the game
Time for each cooperative group to play games.

Materials: 

  • Equipment associated with games:  assortment of balls, bats, hoops, rope, and batons
  • Equipment not associated with games:  masking tape, pipe cleaners, newspaper, tissue box, dried-up markers, yarn, cones, string
  • Paper 
  • Pencil
Procedure: 
1. Organize students in cooperative groups of 4-5.

2. Discuss the types of physical education games typically played.  Review the rules that area associated with games.  Give each group on or more pieces of equipment that is typically associated with games.  Then give the groups a piece of equipment that is not associated with games and a station (area) where the game will be played.

3. Instruct student to design and develop a game that can be played with 4-5 group members using the equipment provided. 
Each game must:
· Have rules in accordance with the playground rules
· Should not humiliate a player
· Cannot put anyone in danger while playing
· Be played in a specific location (game station)
· Be played with 4-5 students
· Have a role for each player
· Have a system fro taking or keeping score
· Use all of the equipment provided

4. Once the members have planned the game the directions should be written down and later typed on the computer using a word processor, printed, and distributed to the class. 

5. The games will be played as teams move around the game stations.
