Dinosaurs on the Playground
Grade Level: 3rd-5th
Overview: Students will use dinosaur fossils to sketch
and draw a dinosaur on the playground blacktop.
Objectives
In this lesson, students will:
· Research online information about the size and shape of a
dinosaur
· Record this information as measurements
· Draw a dinosaur on the blacktop using these measurements
Time Frame
Two 1-hour sessions
Materials
1. Colored sidewalk chalk
2. Art paper for preliminary sketch
3. Measurement tools (rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks)
4. Internet resources listed above
5. Camera
Procedure
1. Students work in cooperative teams using the Internet resources,
encyclopedias, or reference books to select a dinosaur and record information
about the dinosaur’s size and shape based on this data.
2. Students make a preliminary sketch of their dinosaur on art paper
detailing measurements.
3. Each team member should be assigned to draw a specific part of the
dinosaur and spread out on the playground since the drawings will be so
large.
4. Using the preliminary sketch students recreate their dinosaur using
the measurements gained in their research. After the outline of the
dinosaur has been created, color can then be added.
5. Use a camera to capture these creations for posterity.
