Speed + Graphing = Winners!!!

Objectives
In this lesson, students will:

Increase speed and accuracy of addition facts.

Be exposed to use of Excel.

Record and interpret data on a bar graph.
Materials
Graph paper, speed test and daily results,
colored pencils, access to Excel program
Procedure
1. Administer the addition timed test (first week: five minutes; second
week: two minutes).
2. A number is taken of students who missed three or less during the
timed test. This number is sent by email to three participating 5th grade
classes within the county.
3. Each class will use this data to create a bar graph using the Excel
program. Each student will also be responsible for creating a personal
bar graph using graph paper and colored pencils. Both graphs will be color-coded
by class.
4. For extension, the student will use the same data to create line
and circle graphs.

The student will use a variety of measuring devices to collect, organize,
and communicate data.
The student will describe and extend patterns and functions represented
in tables and graphs.
The student will use tables and graphs to identify properties and relationships.
