Purpose

Subjects
Overview
In order to understand written material, it is helpful
to know the author's purpose for writing. This means you need to
determine whether the story or article is written for information (to give
facts), for entertainment (for your enjoyment), or to persuade (make you
think a certain thing). Sometimes you can tell the author's purpose
from the title of the story or article.
Time Frame
30 -45 minutes
Objectives
In this lesson, students will:
-
Understand that materials are written for different
purposes
-
Understand the difference between reading for information,
for entertainment, or for persuasion
-
Demonstrate the knowledge by responding to titles with
the correct purpose
-

Procedure
-
These rules will be explained to each class
before the chat is begun.
-
Each class will draw a baseball diamond on
the board.
-
They will keep track of the other team's players
as they round the bases.
-
Each correct answer will advance all runners
on base.
-
A point is scored when a player crosses home
plate, just as in baseball.
-
There are no doubles, triples, or home runs.
An incorrect answer will be an out.
-
The first team with three outs will lose the
game.
-
If the game needs to be lengthened, play as
though there were innings, and at the end of three innings, the team with
the most points wins.
-
After arranging a chat time with another class,
the first class will present a title on the ICQ chat screen, asking the
other class to respond with the correct answer (inform, entertain, or persuade).
-
If that class responds correctly, they will
have a turn to present a title to the first class.
-
This will continue until one team has three
outs, if playing the short version, or until the end of three innings.
