Overview
As a follow-up to lessons on character traits and
development, this lesson asks the student to create another story character.
The student will write a paragraph describing their character. The student
will visualize an experience from the story and compose their reaction.
Time Frame
Two 30 minute sessions (additional time needed for
computer usage)
Objectives
In this lesson, students will:

Procedure
-
After reading in "Little House On The Prairie" the chapter
on crossing the frozen Mississippi River, the students will be asked to
imagine that they are another Ingall's child.
-
Using their prior knowledge on character traits and
how writers develop a character, they will create the character they imagined
as a prewriting activity.
-
Crossing the Frozen Mississippi Activity Sheet will
be given to each student to write about what they understood about the
experience.

Students will use Microsoft Word to write and save their
activity sheet. Remind them to do grammar and spell check. Students can
go to the address given for a thesaurus to help with overworked words.
