Try Poetry!

This is a link to an article called, "What's The Perfect Text for Struggling Readers?  Try Poetry!" by Timothy Rasinski and Belinda Zimmerman.

Why Poetry?

  • Poems for children are relatively short in length.
  • Poems are fun to read.
  • The rhythmical (predictable) and rhyming nature of most childre's poems add to their ease of learning.
  • Because most poems for children rhyme, they contain multiple instances of rimes (word families) that are a productive way of teaching phonics.

Availability:  The article online is free.  It contains a list of favorite poets.  All instructional coaches have a copy of Timothy Rasinski's book The Fluent Reader.  The book contains a lesson structure that can be used.

Repeated Reading Strategy

Students who need to increase their reading fluency often do well with repeated reading, an intervention in which the reader repeatedly rehearses the same passage aloud while receiving corrective feedback (Lo, Cooke, & Starling, 2011).

Fry Instant Phrases

The words in these phrases come from Dr. Edward  Fry’s Instant Word List (High Frequency Words).  According to Fry, the first 300 words in the list represent about 67% of all the words students encounter in their reading.
