Talbott Elementary Teacher Jessica Kent gets students excited about reading!

Tennessee has adopted revised reading and math standards for 2017-2018.  Click here for a link to the revised English Language Arts Standards.  The ELA Standards are designed to prepare students with the most important knowledge and 21st century literacy skills necessary to succeed in post-secondary and workforce arenas. These standards emphasize critical and divergent thinking, problem solving, and active listening.

Teachers, click here for a link to the District to District website.  This site has a crosswalk between the previous and revised standards broken down for each grade level.  It's very helpful!

Teacher representatives from each school in Jefferson County attended state training on the standards in June.  In July, Jefferson County content specialists are offering sessions on district initiatives including the scope and sequence/pacing guide documents that have been updated to reflect the revised standards.  For more information on these July sessions and to sign up, please follow this link.

Read to Be Ready Summer Reading Camps

Jefferson County Schools is thrilled to announce that five elementary schools received a Read to Be Ready Summer Reading Grant totaling over $140,000 for the district!  Students entering first, second, and third grades that need extra support in reading were invited to attend the half day program for four weeks this summer.  Highly effective teachers instructed small groups of children in a positive, engaging, and fun learning environment.  These lucky students received at least six books to take home through the program.  We believe that these summer reading programs will go a long way in both instilling a love for reading in students and in improving reading achievement. Congratulations to Dandridge Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Piedmont Elementary, Rush Strong School, and Talbott Elementary!
